Breast augmentation, also commonly referred to as “boob job” or breast enlargement is the process of increasing the size of the breasts through inserting body fats or through an implant. The procedure is common amongst women with smaller breast size and feels that they need to enlarge their natural breasts to be uniform to their bodies. This is a common cosmetic surgery procedure done mostly by women to increase their self-confidence.

Who Can Undergo the Procedure?

One needs to meet the following general conditions to successfully undergo breast enlargement procedure:

  • No medical challenges
  • Saline implants require 18+ years, silicone 22+ years
  • Be aware of the procedure, its benefits, and risks
  • Overall good health; be around or at goal weight or, alternatively lower than 30 pounds overweight

The following conditions disqualify a candidate from the procedure:

  • psychologically unstable and when not expecting realistic results from the procedure.

Breast Augmentation Procedure

The process is done by experienced physicians. Here are is a simple step by step guide on how the procedure is conducted:

Anesthesia: administration of medications to keep the patient comfortable during the procedure. The doctor chooses for the patient between general or intravenous anesthesia, depending on the patient

Incision: the inconspicuous areas undergo incision to reduce visible scarring. The plastic surgeon and the patient discuss the available incision options to settle for the most suitable.

Inserting Breast implant: after the incision, a breast implant is inserted into the pocket, the doctors understand how to undergo the insertion better.

Closing the incision: the doctors close the incision using the breast tissue layered sutures and with sutures, surgical tape or skin adhesive to close the skin.

The results: the results of the procedure are visible immediately.

The Recovery Process

Just like any other normal medical surgery, expect to undergo some pain, bruising and swelling immediately after the procedure. The breast may be restricted and the chest may also feel tight. Treat this as normal, and the pain and uneasiness will begin to disappear over the next few weeks. The patient is placed to rest in a semi-upright position to make feel more comfortable and avoid swelling. Painkillers are diagnosed in case a patient needs them.

Going home

Depending on every patient condition, the physician will release the patient to go home the same day or the following day. Whether at home or under special care, the patient needs enough rest to aid in faster recovery. Keep the chest and arms rested to avoid lots of movements since it can lead to bleeding and irritation.

It is wise that the surgeon aftercare advice be followed carefully to get the best results. It will be necessary that one attends the post operative appointments to allow the surgeon to check on the progress and recovery.

After the breast augmentation surgery, avoid making the wounds wet, do not sleep face down, do not take physical activities until advice, and also avoid the driving. In case of the following symptoms, inform your surgeon or personal doctor: breast skin redness, severe breast pain, deflated breasts, excessive swelling of the breasts, colored or smelly discharge from the wounds, any unusual aches or pain, and high temperatures.
